Sunset Neighborways - Project Update - August 2023

Thank you so much for your sustained interest and engagement in the Sunset Neighborways projects.

Between mid-April 2023 through mid-July 2023, the team completed a second community outreach and engagement phase, reaching approximately 1,151 people. The team launched a design outreach hub to showcase the concept designs for the 34th Avenue, 41st Avenue, Kirkham Street, Ortega Street, and Vicente Street proposed Neighborways. The team gathered community feedback by attending community-hosted meetings, through the project email, and with other methods such as an online comment card. The team has analyzed the feedback and a summary of findings that can be found here. 

Next Steps and Project Timeline

  • Public Hearing and Project Approvals – late Fall 2023
  • Implementation of Kirkham St and Ortega St – early 2024
  • Project next steps for remaining six corridors – 2024 and beyond

After much consideration, the project team is prioritizing project delivery for Kirkham Street and Ortega Street proposed Neighborways. Due to funding availability, the other three Neighborways discussed in this most recent phase of outreach (34th Avenue, 41st Avenue, and Vicente Street) will be revisited upon the completion of the project delivery process for the Kirkham Street and Ortega Street Neighborways. The other three Neighborways in the original proposed network from the SFCTA’s D4 Mobility Study (28th Avenue, 47th Avenue, and Rivera Street) will be explored after that.

The project team is currently working on revising and finalizing designs for the Kirkham Street and Ortega Street Neighborways based on the feedback received. The project team is also working closely with the San Francisco Department of Public Works to explore greening options with the existing concept designs for the Sunset Neighborways moving forward for approvals (Kirkham Street and Ortega Street). Final designs for these two Neighborways will be share with the public in Fall 2023.
