Bay Area Bike Share officially launched in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday, August 29, 2013.
The SFMTA, in partnership with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, brought Bay Area Bike Share to San Francisco with 350 bikes and 35 stations. Regionally, there is a total of 700 bikes and 70 stations.
After a successful two-year pilot, the bike share system is expanding. Over the course of a two year phased roll out in San Francisco, San Jose, and the East Bay, the Bay Area Bike Share system will grow from 700 bikes to 7,000 bikes, making it one of the largest and densest bike-share systems in North America.
