Project Updates - March 2026

New traffic signals proposed to be constructed at 45th Ave and Lincoln Way and La Play and Lincoln Way will be constructed as part of SFMTA's Contract 66 New Traffic Signals project. Constructing these new traffic signals as part of the Contract 66 project allows the construction schedule for these new traffic signals to be accelerated. Please refer to the Contract 66 New Traffic Signals project website for the latest updates and current schedule.

Project Introduction

The Lincoln Way New Traffic Signals project will construct new traffic signals at two intersections on Lincoln Way. The new traffic signals constructed by the project will include pedestrian countdown signals (PCS), accessible pedestrian signals (APS), and emergency vehicle preemption (EVP), as well as traffic signal controllers, conduits, wiring, and poles. New handicap accessible curb ramps will be constructed where existing ramps are missing or deficient.

45th Avenue and Lincoln Way

New signals at this intersection will improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians accessing the 45th & Lincoln Blue Boat Playground located within Golden Gate Park near the intersection. When new signals are installed, the east crosswalk crossing Lincoln Way, which terminates into a retaining wall, will be closed while the west crosswalk will be signalized.

La Playa, Lincoln Way, and Martin Luther King Jr Drive

New signals at this intersection will enhance bicycle and pedestrian connectivity between the new Sunset Dunes Park and Golden Gate Park where Martin Luther King Jr Drive is restricted to bicycles and pedestrian traffic only.

After construction of new traffic signals, existing stop signs facing Lincoln Way traffic at 46th Avenue would be removed leaving no remaining stop signs for Lincoln Way traffic. The new traffic signals and stop sign removal aims to reduce travel time for drivers travelling between the Richmond and Sunset districts using the Great Highway between Fulton Street and Lincoln Way.

Public Hearing

New traffic signals proposed as part of the project were presented at an engineering public hearing held on October 3, 2025 and were subsequently approved by the City Traffic Engineer. Changes requiring the approval of the SFMTA Board of Directors were considered and subsequently approved at their December 16, 2025 meeting.
