Week of October 9: Bus stop changes and turn restrictions coming to Geary

Westbound 38R Geary

Implementation of the Quick-Build phase of the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project began in September and continues through November.

Bus stop changes coming to Geary Boulevard tomorrow, October 14

Bus stop changes are happening beginning tomorrow, Saturday, October 14 to improve transit travel time and reliability for the 38 Geary.

  • The 38 local inbound and outbound bus stops at 12th Avenue are being discontinued. Board at Park Presidio or 9th Avenue
  • Nine bus stops are being relocated across the street from the near-side to the far-side of the intersection. The inbound stops at 25th Avenue, 23rd Avenue, 20th Avenue, 17th Avenue, Park Presidio and 6th Avenue will move to the east side of the intersection. The outbound stops at 3rd Avenue, 20th Avenue and 22nd Avenue will move to the west side of the intersection. Learn more about how moving a bus stop from nearside to far-side improves transit performance.

The outbound stop at Geary and 6th Avenue will be relocated to the west side of the intersection in 2025.

Signs have been posted and ambassadors will be available to help direct riders to the nearest bus stop.

Turn restrictions go into effect beginning next week

Left-turn collisions are responsible for 40% of traffic deaths in San Francisco. To improve safety for people walking, left-turn restrictions are being made at key intersections along Geary beginning next week. In other locations on Geary where similar turn restrictions have been implemented, the number of reported vehicle collisions related to left-turn movements have been reduced and there have been no subsequent reported pedestrian collisions.  Learn more about how turn restrictions improve safety.

In addition, westbound right turns from Geary onto northbound 14th Avenue and eastbound right turns from Geary onto southbound Funston have been restricted to allow room for two buses to stop in these locations.

Be on the look-out for signage and Changeable Message Signs that will alert you to these new restrictions.
