Giới thiệu Dự án (Project Introduction)

The Mission Bay Quick-Build Project will design and implement near-term transportation safety features identified in the San Francisco County Transportation Authority’s (SFCTA) Mission Bay School Access Plan. The project area includes Mission Bay Drive west of the roundabout and Mission Bay Boulevard North and South between 4th and 6th streets. These streets were identified as barriers to accessing the new Mission Bay elementary school at Mission Bay Boulevard and 6th Street.

The Mission Bay School Access Plan is an ongoing SFCTA-led project tasked with identifying and solving barriers to active transportation on roads leading to the new Mission Bay Elementary School. The project has so far included:

  • Outreach presentations to neighborhood residents and groups, including an open house and an online survey
  • Identification of and concepts for addressing barriers to access on two key corridors leading to the new school
  • Concept evaluation and cost estimates for both near-term and long-term improvements
  • Report, recommendations, and implementation plan (coming soon)

The quick-build will continue the work of the Mission Bay School Access Plan by implementing improvements on two of the corridors identified as barriers to school access:

  • Installing safe-hit posts on the existing bike lane on Mission Bay Drive west of the roundabout
  • Installing traffic calming measures on Mission Bay Boulevard North and South between 4th and 6th streets.
  • Exploring improvements for ingress/egress by bicycle at 7th Street and Mission Bay Drive

The project anticipates completion ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

Project Benefits

Improvements within the project area will enhance roadway conditions for people who access the neighborhood on foot or by bicycle. The project will implement infrastructure that supports safer trips to school while advancing the goals of San Francisco's Safe Routes to School and Vision Zero Programs.

What is a Quick-Build Project?

Quick-build projects are adjustable and reversible traffic safety improvements that can be installed relatively quickly with lower cost materials. Unlike major capital projects that may take years to plan, design, bid and construct, quick-build projects are buildable within months and are intended to be evaluated and reviewed shortly upon construction.

Typical quick-build improvements can include:

  • Paint, delineators, and signs
  • Traffic calming
  • Daylighting

Project Outreach

The quick-build project will continue building on the outreach efforts that were established during the SFCTA’s Mission Bay School Access Plan. The project team will be soliciting feedback on proposed traffic calming as well as intersections of concern this fall. This feedback will be used to develop our final designs for the quick build in 2026.

Questions and comments may be sent to the project manager, Daniel Carr, at Daniel.Carr@sfmta.com

Evaluation Process

All SFMTA quick-build projects are intended to be evaluated through our Safe Streets Evaluation Program within 24 months of construction. The Safe Streets Evaluation Program will analyze the project before and after implementation to review outcomes and determine design effectiveness. Evaluations will inform near-term modifications and a long-term design for this street.
