The 10 Townsend: Moving till Midnight

Friday, October 24, 2014

Attention 10 Townsend night owls: we’ve got news for you!

This Saturday will bring about a round of Muni service changes aimed at improving service system wide. For all you 10 Townsend riders, this means expanded service hours until midnight.

Currently, the 10 ends service at 7:30 p.m., but starting on Saturday, the line will operate every 30 minutes after 7:30 p.m. until midnight seven days a week. This service expansion was informed by Muni Forward, a program to improve the reliability and frequency of Muni.

Along with the 10 Townsend service expansion, several other Muni Forward projects have improved Muni’s service over the past several months, including transit-priority signal upgrades and red transit-only lanes.

Transit-priority signals make a big difference in Muni’s travel time because they can detect an oncoming Muni vehicle and hold the green light for it. This allows the bus to make it to the next stop without having to wait at a red light. We’ve installed transit-priority signals along the 8X Bayshore Express route and Mission Street routes (14/14L Mission, 49 Van Ness/Mission), and have seen travel time reductions of up to five minutes per trip!

We’ve mentioned the new transit-only lanes along Haight Street and Lincoln Way on this blog before (here and here). These new red lanes are expected to save riders on the 6 Parnassus, 71 Haight/Noriega and 29 Sunset up to five minutes on their daily commute. They also serve as a prime example of the many improvements Muni Forward has in store to streamline customers’ commutes and improve the reliability of Muni.

Other service changes starting this Saturday:

9L San Bruno Limited

  • The inbound (northbound) stop on Bayshore at Visitacion will become an active bus stop for the 9L. Currently, there is no passenger pick-up at this stop. As of tomorrow, customers will be allowed to get off the bus at this location. Buses will pick up passengers north of the intersection following the scheduled layover. Riders who want to get off the bus on Bayshore Boulevard may also ride around the terminal loop to the stop.

30 Stockton

  • The terminal at Chestnut and Fillmore streets will relocate back to Divisadero and Chestnut based on rider feedback.

27 Bryant

  • Routing change to avoid freeway congestion. New route via Bryant: Left on 6th Street, right on Folsom, left on 5th Street to regular route.

38 Geary

  • Muni will operate regular scheduled 38 Geary service to Fort Miley instead of on-demand service.
