As we approach Thanksgiving and reflect on things to be thankful for, SFMTA employees rise high on that list.

Seventy-five years ago, Muni launched the “Operator of the Month” Award to honor excellent drivers. This recognition continues today as one way of saying “Thank You” to those who keep our city moving.

A long tradition

Recognizing employee excellence predates the Operator of the Month award. One of the earliest printed records showing commendations for transit operators was Inside Track. This employee newsletter was published by the Market Street Railway Company starting in 1921. It included letters of praise received from the public and the company’s president.

In 1947, Muni began publishing its own newsletter, Trolley Topics. Like Inside Track, it printed recognition for staff from the public and Railway officials. Prior to this, praise was shared with an employee and recorded in their personnel file.

“Man of the Month” launched in 1950

In September 1950, Muni debuted the “Man of the Month” program. Awarded to both men and women, it was a new way to point out excellence. The award was driven in part by passenger commendations. To gather nominations from riders, Muni ran special ads inside vehicles to promote the award. Operators who received positive commendations were given a “Courtesy Citation." From these, one person per month was chosen by a committee including the mayor of San Francisco.

"Man” of the Month today

Today, the “Man of the Month” tradition continues as the Division Operator of the Month and Systemwide Operator of the Month awards. Union leaders and management at every division collaborate to choose the honorees. The award is based in part on passenger feedback as well as safety and attendance records. Systemwide winners are the top honorees across the entire Muni system.

Recognizing all SFMTA staff

Muni Operators are not the only staff in the spotlight when it comes to recognizing good work. Each month, staff from across the SFMTA receive special recognition at the SFMTA Board meeting. This award highlights both individuals and teams for their service to the city in a public forum.

You can make a positive impact

You can play a crucial role in making sure staff are acknowledged for good work. Every time you experience great service, you can submit positive feedback online or by calling 311. Anything counts—big or small.

A big thanks to all the public servants across the SFMTA who keep San Francisco moving.
