Effective Saturday, August 29, 2026
Service Change Summary
Beginning on Saturday, August 29, changes to Muni service will go into effect with the goal of making systemwide improvements in frequency and reliability while allowing for smoother operations on several routes across San Francisco. We are also working to increase capacity to address crowding in a cost-neutral manner.
These updates are based on rider feedback, operator input and service data. Some changes add more frequent service or more room where crowding is highest. Others adjust routes, stops or schedules to help buses and trains run more reliably.
Muni Service Changes
The following changes will be implemented beginning on Saturday, August 29, 2026:
- Buses on the 1 California will arrive every nine minutes instead of every ten minutes. Buses operating between Presidio and downtown will come every four to five minutes.
- During peak hours, the N Judah will arrive every nine minutes instead of every 10 minutes. We also aim to reduce congestion at the La Playa terminal as part of these changes.
- All 5R Fulton Rapid trips will use 60-foot buses instead of a mix of 40- and 60-foot buses. The route will run every 10 minutes. The larger buses will provide more room than the route had before the February 2026 service changes.

Muni trips on several other routes including the 22 Fillmore and 29 Sunset will see some added capacity hours to help ease congestion. This is also true for the 38R Geary Rapid and 49 Van Ness/Mission during morning peak hours. Lastly, the 29 Sunset will notice some added capacity in the evening.
Service changes for students going back to school
We will be providing a one-seat ride from Visitacion Valley to Francisco Middle School. Students previously had to transfer from the 8AX to get to school. Starting at the end of the month, a few morning 8AX Bayshore Express trips will serve the 8 Bayshore stops north of Broadway to accommodate this change.
The 28R 19th Avenue Rapid will now serve 19th Avenue & Eucalyptus Drive. This will bring service closer to Lowell High School and provide another option for students.
37 Corbett, 66 Quintara, and K Ingleside
We are adjusting service slightly at three middle schools: Hoover Middle School, Rooftop School and Aptos Middle School.
Students at Hoover Middle School and Rooftop School will use the typical 66 Quintara and 37 Corbett service, respectively, at their regular stops.
Aptos Middle School students can take the K Ingleside westbound to the Ocean Ave/CCSF Pedestrian Bridge stop, then board the 8 Bayshore at Geneva Ave & Howth St.
Reliability improvements
22 Fillmore Owl Service
The 22 Fillmore Owl schedule (12 to 5 a.m. nightly) will be more reliable. The schedule is better aligned with travel times. It will continue to provide service every 30 minutes. We encourage riders who use this route to check the schedule for updates.
