Muni’s Track Maintenance staff is power washing boarding platforms along the T Third corridor this fall as part of a new overnight maintenance program.

While the city sleeps, the streets take on a quiet calmness. Meanwhile, Muni’s Track Maintenance team is wide awake.

You may not see them, but their work benefits your ride.

Building on the success of Fix It! Weekends this summer, we have developed a proactive maintenance program for the T Third focused on corridor upkeep and reliability. Overnight maintenance work we’re doing along the line includes:

•    Regular inspecting and cleaning
•    Maintenance of the platforms, transit shelters, gates, rail infrastructure and other rider amenities

This is all happening through November 2026 in a continued effort to provide a clean, safe and reliable ride. The work is scheduled between midnight and 5 a.m. to minimize impacts on riders and the community. Owl service is not affected.

In the early hours of a recent Tuesday morning, an agency crew thoroughly power washed the platform and shelter at the southbound Carroll Avenue T Third stop.

“When people wake up, it’s clean,” said Track Maintenance Supervisor Kirk Lauti. “It always feels good putting a smile on people's faces when they start or end their day."

Overnight T Third Maintenance and Cleaning Schedule

Our work this year on the T Third stops at Carroll, Evans, Revere/Shafter, Le Conte and Sunnydale has been completed.

The remaining tentatively scheduled overnight maintenance for 2026 is as follows:

   • Williams Southbound stop, Oct. 27
   • Gilman Northbound stop, Nov. 3
   • Gilman Southbound stop, Nov. 10
   • Arleta Northbound stop, Nov. 17
   • Arleta Southbound stop, Nov. 18

Future maintenance work at Hudson, Kirkwood and Sunnydale will be scheduled soon.

T Third Fix -It! Weekends in July Deliver Upgrades

In July 2026, we completed the first-ever Fix It! Weekends focused on the T Third. Our crews worked with partner agencies on critical repairs, upgrades and cleaning.

The coordinated effort focused on the route between Evans Avenue and Sunnydale over two weekends.

Train service was temporarily replaced by bus service on the line, giving crews uninterrupted access to the tracks and platforms to complete work simultaneously.

Coordinating projects over two weekends improved efficiency. It also reduced the need for repeated disruptions and enabled repairs that keep the T Third operating safely and reliably.

Key accomplishments from the July Fix It! Weekends for the T Third included:

•    Completion of the corridor’s scheduled Federal Railroad Administration insulation resistance testing
•    Upgrades to 23 track circuit box covers
•    Upgrading and replacing worn signal components of 184 traffic signal heads and replacement of more than 400 individual LEDs
•    Replacement of four overhead line breakers
•    Completion of multiple rail repairs and rail tie replacements
•    Rehabilitation of three station platforms

Regular maintenance keeps Muni in a state of good repair. And that makes your ride safer, cleaner and more reliable.
