Improvements Proposed for Vicente Street in the Sunset

Like most streets in the Outer Sunset, Vicente Street has road space to spare. We’ve proposed changes to Vicente, from 17th Avenue to the beach, that would re-align parking spaces to add more of them, improve visibility at street corners and add bike lanes.

These changes are on the agenda for our bi-weekly engineering public hearing tomorrow, and there will be other chances to weigh in on them before they’re approved.

Here are the changes proposed for Vicente, between 17th Ave. and Lower Great Highway:

Re-Aligned Parking Spaces

• In response to a petition from neighbors, parallel parking spaces would be converted to perpendicular spaces on the south side of Vicente, between 44th and 46th avenues. This will add a net addition of five parking spaces the rest of the changes taken into account.
   
• Existing “front-in” angled parking spaces would be converted to “back-in” angled spaces on the south side of Vicente, between 39th and 40th avenues. Back-in angled parking makes it easier for drivers to see other traffic as they leave parking spaces.

Bike Lanes

• Nearly every block on this stretch of Vicente will get striped bike lanes in both directions, similar to those on Ortega and Cabrillo streets, to make it more comfortable to bike on.

 “Daylighting” at Street Corners

• Certain street corners in front of schools on Vicente will get “daylighting” - the removal of parking spaces at corners to make it easier for everyone on the street to see each other at intersections, especially in the crosswalk.

This is just one of the many types of street changes we propose in response to community requests and to make neighborhood streets safer.
