May 2019 Update - Octavia Blvd Enhancement Program

Thank you for your interest in the Octavia Boulevard Enhancement Program. This update includes quick status updates as well as details for an upcoming public engagement opportunity for both the Octavia 'Open Street' Project and the Page Street Neighborway.

Octavia 'Open Street' Project

As part of the Octavia Boulevard Enhancement Program, SFMTA is advancing a proposal to close one block of Octavia Street - between Linden and Hayes streets - to vehicular traffic to create safer travel conditions around Patricia's Green. The project is in response to long-standing requests from residents to calm traffic and create more public space around Hayes Valley's central gathering area.

The project will also simplify the Hayes & Octavia intersection by providing shorter crosswalks and a more defined bicycle crossing, additionally benefiting transit and vehicle flow on Hayes Street. More loading space will be provided on Fell Street to accommodate the growing demand for passenger loading in the neighborhood.

After several years of studying temporary closures of this block tied to community events, we invite you to an open house to speak with city staff about what we have learned and to provide your feedback. We will share information from the temporary closures and subsequent study on traffic circulation, safety, activation opportunities, as well as notable future changes coming to the area. This is an opportunity to formally comment on the project prior to it being considered by the SFMTA Board of Directors.

Page Street Neighborway

Another part of the Octavia Boulevard Enhancement Program is the Page Street Neighborway, a multi-phase effort to make the street a safer and more pleasant place to walk and bike to neighborhood destinations and nearby parks. For more information, please see the full Page Street Neighborway update here.

In conjunction with the Octavia 'Open Street' Project, we invite you to the open house on June 4th to review and discuss potential pilot circulation changes on and in the vicinity of Page Street to address ongoing safety and congestion issues. After holding off on approvals in 2018, the SFMTA is looking to engage with interested stakeholders one last time before updating the proposal and seeking approval and implementation later this year.
