Presidio Facility Bus Lifts Improvement Project

New bus lift in service
Upon the completion of the Presidio Facility Bus Lifts Improvement Project scheduled for late November, the new state-of-art bus lifts will help repair and maintain our fleet of approximately165 forty-foot electric buses in Muni Presidio Bus Yard.
The construction, originally scheduled for 15 months, started in January 2020. Thanks to the hard work and collaboration between the SFMTA and contractor, the project is completed three months ahead of schedule despite a four-week pause due to COVID-19.
Besides replacing five existing bus lifts and adding a new one, the project also replaced seven overhead roll-up doors and two new security gates. The new lifts have the latest safety features and will increase work efficiency by improving access to the bus undercarriage. In the long run, the project will also reduce the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste and noise. All these things together will enable us to get buses back into service faster.
This project is our ongoing effort to improve transit service and functionality of the Muni work conditions.
New bus lift helps worker maintain buses
Maintenance crews work hard to keep our city's Muni buses running every day. In order to improve one of our key facilities and upgrade their work environment, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is implementing the Presidio Facility Bus Lifts Improvement Project. The project is going to break ground in mid-January 2020. Over approximately 15 months, we will replace and install new heavy-duty vehicle lifts, new overhead roll-up doors, and new security gates in the Presidio facility. Work hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some weekend work may occur as needed. The project is limited within the bus maintenance yard and does not directly impact transit service or the public right of way. Measures will be taken to limit noise and dust, including during concrete demolitions.

Background:
The SFMTA's Presidio Maintenance Facility is a 5.75-acre site located in the Laurel Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. At Presidio, the SFMTA maintains a fleet of approximately 165, 40-foot electric trolley buses. The facility provides preventative maintenance and light body repair of the vehicles. The existing bus lifts were installed in the mid-80’s and are beyond the end of their useful life. The existing lifts break down frequently, impacting the staff’s ability to maintain buses and keep them in service.
Project Benefits:
The modifications entailed in this project will improve workers’ safety by installing new lifts that have the latest safety features, increase work efficiency by improving access to the bus undercarriage, and reduce infrastructure maintenance requirements. In the long run, the project will reduce the transportation system’s resource consumption, emissions, waste and noise. All these things together should help us get buses back into service faster.

Construction Impacts and Community Outreach:
The work at the Presidio facility is limited to work within the bus maintenance yard and does not directly impact transit service or the public right of way. Public outreach will focus on notifying residential and commercial neighbors adjacent to the facility of intermittent and temporary noise and dust impacts. Communication methods will include reaching out to the district supervisor’s office, meeting with local neighborhood community groups, issuing information flyers to adjacent residences and businesses, and creating a project website.
Work Hours:
7am to 8pm daily, except special hours for installation of the security gates.
