Thank you for your continued interest in the Page Street Bikeway Improvements Pilot.

The project team has enjoyed spending additional time discussing the proposed pilot project with the community over the past month, including residents and merchants on Haight Street. Based on the collective feedback received, the SFMTA is proposing the following changes to the project as originally introduced:

Peak period parking restrictions on Haight Street

We clearly heard from many Haight Street constituents that daytime access for parking and loading is important. In response, the originally proposed 7am-7pm parking restriction on the south side of Haight Street between Webster and Buchanan streets has been reduced to peak period hours only (7-10am, 3-6pm).

Expansion of Residential Permit Parking

We know that neighborhood parking is important, and the loss of spaces can be difficult to swallow. To ease the burden, we worked with our Curb Management team on proposed changes to Residential Permit Parking to expand the blocks on which Area ‘S’ permit holders can park. These expanded blocks could include:

  • The east side of Webster Street between Fell and Page streets
    • Available to both Area 'S' and 'Q' permit holders
  • The east side of Webster Street between Page and Haight streets
  • The west side of Buchanan Street between Page and Haight streets
  • The north side of Haight Street between Webster and Buchanan streets

These changes are undergoing internal review and would be presented to the SFMTA Board about a month after the Page Street pilot project. We are coordinating our efforts to ensure we can implement the parking changes alongside the pilot circulation changes.

Our Curb Management team is also in the early stages of a comprehensive study of parking and loading in the Hayes Valley neighborhood. Find out more about the Hayes Valley Parking & Curb Management Plan by visiting their website.

Upcoming ‘office hours’ with SFMTA project staff

The project team will continue outreach ahead of the SFMTA Board hearing to ensure interested stakeholders have a chance to ask questions and discuss the project.

Project staff will be holding two Coffee/Tea Chats to answer questions and talk through the project proposal and evaluation in detail.

Coffee/Tea Chat #1
Wed, Nov. 6, 2019 from 5-7pm at Café International (508 Haight Street)

Coffee/Tea Chat #2
Thu, Nov. 7, 2019 from 8-10am at Mercury Café (201 Octavia Street)

November 19, 2019 SFMTA Board of Directors meeting

The Page Street Bikeway Pilot proposal is now scheduled to be heard at the SFMTA Board of Directors on Tuesday, November 19th at 1:00PM in Room 400 at City Hall.

If you are unable to attend the office hours or SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, comments on the project can be sent to ‘1 South Van Ness Ave, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103, care of the SFMTA Board of Directors’, or by emailing feedback prior to November 19 to PageBikeway@sfmta.com with the subject 'SFMTA Board of Directors.' Submissions are public record and will be taken to the attention of the SFMTA Board.

Next Steps

If approved by the SFMTA Board of Directors, the pilot bikeway and circulation changes would be implemented using temporary materials such as signs, paint, and plastic posts. These changes would remain in place for up to 18 months to allow for data collection, outreach, and evaluation.
