Construction Starting Soon on 7th Street

Thank you for your interest in the 7th Street Safety Project.

The 7th Street Safety Project (Phase 3) will soon start construction to complete traffic safety improvements for all road users along the corridor. This is an effort to install project elements approved in Fall 2019, including protected bikeways and parking & loading changes.

Construction Updates

Construction is expected to start on the week of May 25, 2020 and will be completed on a block-by-block basis, starting from Townsend Street at the southern end to Harrison Street at the northern end. The block from Harrison Street to Folsom Street is tentatively scheduled to start later in the summer and will be closely coordinated with adjacent institutions. Installation of transit boarding islands will also begin at a later date.

We ask for your patience and consideration as we work to bring these vital safety improvements to the 7th Street corridor. Work may last through June, weather permitting. General work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Traffic/Transit Impact

  • At times, there may be temporary intersection or lane closures as crews perform work, resulting in possible travel delays. Please plan to allow for extra travel time during construction due to possible delays.
  • Traffic will be routed around construction activity as necessary, but will not be detoured. Pedestrian pathways and access to driveways and commercial/residential buildings will be maintained at all times.
  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated nearby as new bus boarding islands are being constructed and will be restored to their original locations. Once a new midblock transit boarding island on Townsend Street between 7th Street and 8th Street is completed, the inbound 19 Polk bus stop on 7th Street north of Townsend Street will move there permanently, which will facilitate transfers to the 10 Townsend bus route.
  • To accommodate the protected bikeway configuration and transit boarding islands, a road-diet will permanently remove a northbound travel lane on 7th Street between Brannan Street and Cleveland Street. On-street parking will be shifted away from the curb.
