4th & King Construction Starts Tonight!

Friday, November 6, 2015

Construction at 4th and King streets starts tonight and will be disruptive. You should avoid driving in the area if you can. For eight days the Central Subway work will require re-routing Muni and detouring traffic. It will be noisy and make getting through the area take a little longer. It will also help transform our city.

The above map will be on fliers that SFMTA Ambassadors will hand out in the area and along impacted routes.

The landmark Central Subway project is really taking shape, and the 4th and King work is a key milestone. It will put into place the linchpin that will ultimately knit our city’s transit system together.

The Central Subway, the second phase of the T Third Line, will connect the fastest-growing part of San Francisco, its eastern side, in a straight shot to the Moscone Center, Union Square and Chinatown. That’s going to make the transit system work better for everyone. But first we have to build the tracks to get there. That’s what we’re doing now.

The SFMTA, which runs Muni, started this work over Labor Day weekend. This is the best time to finish it. It’s after the Giants' season is done and before the holiday rush.

The $1.6 billion project has other key elements that are well underway. The tracks going in at 4th and King streets will extend underground at this tunnel. Photo taken November 5, 2015.

Other project accomplishments along the subway route include the roof of the tunnel connecting the new Union Square Station with the existing Powell Station. The roof will be completed and covered over this month, which will allow Ellis Street to open to traffic. Check out the video below to see the subway taking shape before your eyes.
