Polk Streetscape Project Update - December 2015

SFMTA Update

As part of the Polk Streetscape Project, the SFMTA continues to implement interim safety improvements on Polk Street including:

  • Leading pedestrian intervals which allow pedestrians a few seconds of "WALK" signal before vehicles receive a green light at intersections with existing pedestrian signals
  • Red curb “daylighting” to increase pedestrian visibility at signalized and stop-controlled intersection approaches
  • Loading zones with more efficient locations and better loading times
  • New accessible parking spaces
  • New bicycle shared lane markings on northbound Polk Street between Post Street and Union Street
  • A new right turn lane at northbound Broadway at Polk Street.

These improvements are either in place or will be implemented by the end of the year. Please visit the SFMTA's project website for a description of the full streetscape project, project renderings and past meeting materials.

San Francisco Public Works Construction Update

The final design for the Polk Streetscape Project is near completion and the contract for construction will be advertised next month. Construction, to be managed by SF Public Works, is scheduled to begin in summer 2016. Public Works will work closely with the selected contractor to minimize disruptions and when possible, will seek community input to inform the phasing of the work. Public Works will set up a dedicated web page with updates and alerts for construction in the spring of 2016.

SFMTA Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project Update

The Van Ness Corridor Transportation Improvement Project is scheduled to begin construction in early 2016. In preparation, the SFMTA and Walsh Construction Company are working to finalize an appropriate construction schedule and traffic management plan, and have been working with the residents and businesses on the Van Ness Corridor to prepare for construction. The Polk Streetscape Project and Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit Project team members meet regularly to coordinate project work.
