CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES

Transportation Impacts related to FIFA World Cup 26™ SF

As we are gearing up for the FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area that showcases all that San Francisco has to offer, we want to keep you updated on transportation, traffic and parking updates.

See transportation details for FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area at SFMTA.com/WorldCup.

Beginning Thursday, June 11 through Sunday, July 19, during event weeks, it is anticipated moderate impacts in and around areas where official soccer watch parties will be held at events citywide, including official gatherings at Pier 39, Spark Social Yerba Buena Garden and Thrive City (Chase Center) as well as many neighborhood events.

It is expected limited parking changes, as well as street and sidewalk closures in San Francisco. These impacts are expected to be intermittent throughout the tournament to support community fan activities.

The SFMTA staff are working to finalize details and plans with our City partners and will provide an update about all street, sidewalks and parking changes across San Francisco. We look forward to ensuring that FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area is a rewarding experience for everyone in San Francisco.

Several matches in Santa Clara will have evening start times. Muni is operating late-night shuttle service to ensure people get home or their transfer in San Francisco safely. Shuttles will circulate between Union Square, SoMa, BART and Caltrain at 4th/King and serve stops along the 45 Union/Stockton line.

Late match extra service schedule:

  • Thursday, June 25
    • 2:15 to 5:15 p.m.
    • 10:45p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

UPDATE: 13th Street Safety Project

Now until 2027: The 13th Street Safety Project is currently under construction to deliver new traffic safety improvements on 13th Street and Duboce Avenue between Folsom and Valencia streets, including protected bike lanes, sidewalk extensions, traffic signal upgrades, accessibility upgrades, sewer upgrades, repaving, and parking/loading changes.

Crews will work at multiple locations over the course of construction, with intermittent lane impacts, traffic shifts, and parking restrictions. Road users should use caution near crews, follow posted signage, and plan for extra travel time when moving through the corridor:

  • 13th Street at South Van Ness Avenue (Division Circle Navigation Center frontage): Crews are building a new sidewalk segment and a separate bike lane channel. During this work, only one eastbound right-turn lane is available from 13th Street to southbound South Van Ness Avenue. When construction is complete, both eastbound right-turn lanes will reopen. Restoration is anticipated to be at the end of June 2026

Construction is led by San Francisco Public Works in partnership with the SFMTA. For construction updates and to sign up for notifications, visit sfpublicworks.org/13thStreetSafety. For project details and design information, visit SFMTA.com/13thStreetSafety.

UPDATE: Westbound I-80 Bay Bridge Fremont Street / Folsom Street Off-Ramp Closure

Caltrans will perform urgent repair work on the westbound I-80 Bay Bridge Upper Deck at two locations near the Fremont Street / Folsom Street off-ramp (Exit 2C). For more information, visit San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Joint Rehabilitation Project.

To facilitate this work, the Fremont Street / Folsom Street off-ramp (right-side exit), including the westbound I-80 Bus Ramp, will be closed during the following periods:

  • From 11 p.m., Tuesday, June 23 to 5 a.m., Wednesday, June 24;
  • From 11 p.m., Wednesday, June 24 to 5 a.m., Thursday, June 25

The Harrison Street off-ramp (left-side exit) will remain open at all times.

ONGOING

ONGOING: Citywide Muni Service Changes

Since Saturday, June 6, Muni made service changes across San Francisco. These changes aim to improve reliability, reduce crowding and make trips more consistent for riders. These Muni service changes are cost neutral.

Several routes will receive schedule adjustments to improve spacing between buses and reduce delays. To respond to crowding, the SFMTA is also adding targeted late-night service to these routes: 14 Mission and 14 Owl.

There will be additional updates which include:

  • Stop changes on the following bus routes: 35 Eureka and 48 Quintara/24th Street
  • Reliability improvements on the T Third
  • New stop locations tied to the Lake Merced Quick Build Project

These changes are based on rider feedback, operator input and service data. Due to the SFMTA’s budget gap, we cannot increase overall Muni service. Without new funding sources, the SFMTA would have to make significant cuts to Muni service It could mean eliminating one-third of service. For more information about the SFMTA’s budget and the potential solutions we are considering, visit the budget webpage.

For more information, visit SFMTA.com/ServiceChanges.

ONGOING: Mobile Payment Options and Parking Spots Reservation

To make parking in San Francisco easier and more convenient, the SFMTA is now offering more options for paying at meters and reserving parking spots in advance, whether you are driving to work, an event or a night out.

Two new mobile options—ParkMobile and HotSpot—are now available for paying for metered parking in San Francisco. With these apps, drivers can receive payment reminders, extend parking time remotely, and manage parking payment effortlessly from their mobile phone. Customers may also continue to pay with cash or card.

The SFMTA also introduced an online reservation system for reserving a parking space at most city-owned garages up to six months in advance. This system was originally launched at the Civic Center and Performing Arts Garages for special events, it is now available at the majority of the 22 SFMTA garages citywide. This convenient feature removes the hassle of searching for parking and ensures you’ll have a guaranteed space. For more information, visit www.SFMTA.com/ReserveParking.

PayByPhone has been phased out and is no longer available for payment at city-owned parking meters in San Francisco. If you would like to pay for metered parking with an app, please download and use ParkMobile and HotSpot. For details and to choose the app that works for you, visit www.SFMTA.com/PayToPark.

ONGOING: Transbay Howard Streetscape Project – Road Construction

Feb. 2026 through 2028: As a part of the Transbay Howard Streetscape Project, new safety upgrades, traffic signal infrastructure, landscaping and a protected two-way bicycle lane are being built on Howard Street between The Embarcadero and 4th Street.

Due to work at multiple sites, expect intermittent delays and lane closures on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drivers should exercise caution near construction zones, follow posted detour signage, and consider using alternate routes. During major events and conventions, work will be paused near Moscone Center.

This is a San Francisco Public Works project, with support from the SFMTA. For more information and to sign up for construction updates, visit sfpublicworks.org/TransbayHoward. To learn more about the project design, visit SFMTA.com/TransbayHoward.

ONGOING: SFPUC Geary Boulevard Sewer and Water Replacements

Now until 2027: Replacement work of sewer and water lines is currently taking place along Geary Boulevard between 32nd Avenue and Stanyan Street. Due to construction work at multiple locations, some of the bus stops for Muni routes 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid will be temporarily relocated nearby. Riders should look for orange signage at impacted bus stops.
