UPDATE: L Taraval Improvement Project—Segment B

The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, and to rehabilitate aging rails, utility lines and roadway pavement along the L Taraval line between Sunset Boulevard and 15th Avenue and on Ulloa Street near West Portal.

The L Taraval Improvement Project has been substantially completed! The SFMTA would like to thank to our community partners, residents and merchants for their support and patience throughout the project design and construction.

L Taraval Train Service Returns

Beginning Saturday, Sept. 28, L Taraval trains will resume service between Embarcadero Station and SF Zoo. Riders will once again be able to enjoy a one-seat ride from downtown to the beach. Trains will run on 10-minute frequencies on weekdays and 12-minutes on weekends. Board trains at the platform or street instead of using the buses at the curb. L Bus service will be discontinued.

The initial trains will start from the following points.

  • First Inbound trips from Wawona Street and 46th Avenue
    • At 6 a.m., the first trip traveling eastbound from the Zoo will change to an M Ocean View outbound train at West Portal and will head back to Balboa Park (Note: This is a special arrangement for the first trip leaving the Zoo on Saturdays due to subway will not open until 8 a.m. on weekends).
    • At 7:50 a.m., the first trip will enter the subway traveling to The Embarcadero
  • First Outbound trips
    • At 5:24 a.m., the first trip will depart West Portal for the Zoo from Ulloa Street and Lenox Way (Note: subway will not open until 8 a.m. on weekends)
    • At 8:06 a.m., the first trip will enter the subway departing The Embarcadero for the Zoo

A Better, Safer Taraval

The L Taraval Improvement Project was a multi-agency effort between the SFMTA, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and San Francisco Public Works to upgrade and add new infrastructure along the L Taraval line between West Portal and the Zoo.

While the biggest work is behind us, there are still a few smaller “punch list” items remaining, such as adjusting utility lines, refreshing transit lane paint, boarding island grout work, removing construction materials and installing transit shelters.

San Francisco residents and Muni riders will soon enjoy the new Taraval Street, from West Portal to Parkside, and to the beach, with a safer, more reliable ride.

For additional project details, visit SFMTA.com/LTaravalProject. For construction updates and more information from Monday, Sept 9 through Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, visit the Project Update page.
