New Accessible Platform for J and K Lines at Balboa Park Station

The Green Light Rail Center Track Replacement project aims to enhance system reliability and efficiency and result in a reduction of infrastructure maintenance.

The work includes replacing worn storage tracks and revenue tracks for the J and K lines, upgrades to the overhead contact system, the building of a new key stop for the J and K lines with an ADA accessible ramp at San Jose Avenue and some landscape improvements around the perimeter of the facility.

Project Details

The Curtis E. Green Light Rail Center facility serves as a cleaning, electrical, painting, repair, inspection and wheel truing shop and is a light rail terminus for the J and K lines. It is located in close proximity to the Balboa BART station and supports heavy pedestrian traffic during peak periods.

The Green Light Rail Center Track Replacement project aims to enhance system reliability and efficiency and result in a reduction of infrastructure maintenance.

Key components are:

  • Replacement of the worn storage track and switches and special track work in the yard

  • Upgrading of the Overhead Contact System

  • Upgrading of the electrical system

  • Improving the lighting within the yard

  • Construction of a key stop with an ADA accessible ramp at San Jose Ave as an embarking point for the J and K lines

  • Landscape work around the yard next to the sidewalk along San Jose and Ocean Avenue  

PROJECT UPDATE

  • Construction of a new accessible Muni Metro key stop on the east side of the Balboa Park Station has been completed as part of phase 1. Service began on April 27, 2015.

  • Phase 2 of construction began April 27, 2015 and will continue until September 2016.

Through multi-agency coordination with BART, SFMTA and SFCTA, the Balboa Park Eastside Connection project is also related, and aims to enhance accessibility, convenience, visibility + sightlines, safety + security, and placemaking.
