Carnaval Weekend: Festival and Parade

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Holiday Service Schedule and Enforcement Reminder:

This Monday, Memorial Day, Muni will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Also on Monday, seven-day street sweeping and parking meters (including those meters on Port of San Francisco property) will be enforced. Residential permit, Monday through Friday street sweeping, and commuter tow away will not be enforced. For complete details visit the holiday enforcement schedule webpage.

Events:

On a regular weekend, the Mission District is normally alive with the sounds of music blaring and the aroma of delicious cuisine wafting through the air, but this weekend it’s amplified a few notches as Carnaval returns for a two-day, over-the-top neighborhood block party.

Carnaval Festival
Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Harrison Street between 16th and 24th streets

There will be a whole lot of dancing taking place along Harrison Street between 16th and 24th streets, as the free two-day Carnaval Festival showcases a mix of Latin music across six stages throughout the event. This year’s headlining artist will be the beloved and internationally recognized salsero, the “Lion of Salsa,” Oscar D’Leon. In addition to the music and dancing, there will be great food, arts and crafts and plenty of entertainment for the kids.

Large crowds are expected and parking will be limited. Help reduce traffic congestion by utilizing public transportation. Muni service on the 9 San Bruno, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 22 Fillmore, 27 Bryant, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 48 Quintara/24th, 49 Mission/Van Ness, and 67 Bernal Heights will get you close to different sections of the festival.

Save yourself some time by purchasing your Muni fare in advance through the MuniMobile app.

Muni service note: While there will be no re-routes, service in the area may experience minor delays due to an increase in ridership and pedestrian traffic.

Carnaval Parade
Sunday, 9:30 a.m.
Mission District

Themed “Viva La Madre Tierra” (Long Live Mother Earth), the 38th annual Carnaval Parade will focus on the need to combat the effects of climate change. Traditionally a mix of entertainment and spectacle, the parade will feature dozens of ornate floats, hundreds of colorfully attired dancers and an array of music representing the diversity of Latin American and Caribbean culture.

This year’s grand marshal, Dolores Huerta, a leader and icon of the labor rights movement, will help get the parade started. Beginning at Harrison and 24th streets, the parade will proceed west on 24th Street, head north along Mission Street to complete its route at 17th Street.

Due to street closures and large crowds, public transportation is the recommended option. The 9 San Bruno, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 22 Fillmore, 27 Bryant, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 48 Quintara/24th, 49 Mission/Van Ness, and 67 Bernal Heights will get you close. BART service to 24th Street is another option.

Muni service note: during the parade the following routes will have re-routes: 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 27 Bryant, 33 Ashbury/18th, 48 Quintara/24th, 49 Mission/Van Ness, and 67 Bernal Heights.
