Streets Division 2022 Internship Program Now Accepting Applications
The SFMTA Streets Division (formerly the Sustainable Streets Division) Internship Program is hiring for summer 2022. This program is aimed at undergraduate and graduate school students who are interested in working as transportation planners, traffic engineers, and mechanical engineers. After interviewing, successful candidates will be placed on teams within the Agency’s Streets, Transit, and Taxis, Access, and Mobility Services divisions to work on projects that help residents and visitors of San Francisco get where they need to be safely and equitably.
We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate an ability to analyze data, convey messages effectively, and work collaboratively. Ideal candidates also have a passion for transportation, an interest in public service, and have applied knowledge of software relevant to their fields.
The Streets Division Internship Program will be hiring interns on the following teams:

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we expect to operate the internship program as a hybrid of remote and in-office work. Due to the need for fieldwork as well as state Disaster Service Worker requirements, interns will be required to be based in the Bay Area for the extent of their internship. This direction is subject to change based on guidance from County public health officials. Interns are also required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment, as are all employees for the City and County of San Francisco.
In addition to the teams that are taking part in the Streets Division Internship Program, the following teams are hiring interns for the summer of 2022:
- Cable Car
- Finance and Information Technology
- Maintenance of Way
Positions on these teams will be filled from the same set of applicants but will have a separate interview process and generally do not participate in field trips or seminars. They also may have different remote work policies.
