The northeast neighborhood of the Mission District is one of San Francisco's most dynamic and diverse areas. It features a mix of commercial and industrial businesses, residential homes, and recreational destinations that make it both unique and attractive. However, the lack of parking regulations has created ongoing challenges with parking and curb access for residents, workers, and visitors. Since 2010, there have been a few distinct efforts to advance a neighborhood-wide parking plan. The most recent effort was in 2019 but was paused at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and when it was restarted and brought to a Public Hearing, there was significant opposition.

Advancing neighborhood‑wide changes requires broad community support, which has not been secured; however, it is clear many community members want regulations near their home or business. As such, the approach will pivot from a neighborhood-wide plan to a block-by-block approach (or multiple blocks, depending on the level of interest).

With the updated approach, SFMTA will manage parking and curb regulation changes in response to requests from residents, businesses, or other local stakeholders, allowing issues to be addressed where there is demonstrated need and interest.

Staff from across the Curb Management team—including Residential Permit Parking, Meter Operations, and Loading and Short-Term Parking—have been engaged to support this effort and to coordinate, manage, and implement incoming requests.
