Effective Saturday, June 21, 2025
Summary
Starting Saturday, June 21, Muni service changes will go into effect. These changes are part of our ongoing work to solve the SFMTA’s near-term budget deficit while minimizing its impacts on San Francisco. While we had to make the difficult decision to cut service in some cases, we’re also taking every opportunity we can to improve your trips.
To help you prepare, we’ll share more details about the service plan below. For even more in-depth information, including how community feedback shaped our approach and ways to get in touch for a service plan presentation or assistance in another language, visit our Muni Service Changes blog.
Service Change Summary
Beginning June 21, three Muni routes will switch back -- changing from inbound to outbound service -- at Market Street during weekdays: the 5 Fulton, 9 San Bruno and 31 Balboa. Additionally, two more routes -- the 6 Haight/Parnassus and 21 Hayes -- will be consolidated into one new route: the 6 Hayes/Parnassus. This new route will also switchback once it reaches Market Street. These changes will free up resources -- namely vehicles and operators -- for use on other Muni routes where needed.
Notes:
- Riders will then be able to transfer at Market Street to get to their destination where Muni buses will provide service approximately every three to four minutes. Additionally, riders may transfer to the Market Street subway where the five Muni Metro lines together provide service approximately every two minutes on weekdays.
- Once you board a Muni bus or train, you have two hours to make free transfers to any other Muni vehicle.
- Be sure to receive real-time Muni service alerts via email or text by signing up through our Email and Text Subscriptions page.

Beginning with the start of service on Saturday, June 21, the former 6 Haight-Parnassus and 21 Hayes routes will be consolidated into the new 6 Hayes-Parnassus Route which will operate between The Inner Sunset and Civic Center. Stop Changes to Improve Safety and Access
Starting June 21, 2025, we are also making changes to some bus stops. These changes are not connected to the agency’s budget shortfall. They are part of our ongoing work to help make Muni safer and more reliable.
- The outbound stop at 228 Bayshore Blvd will move about 240 feet south, to the intersection at Costa Street. This moves the bus stop further away from where multiple lanes of traffic merge to improve safety.
Map

- The outbound stop at 4th St & Berry St will move to 4th St & Townsend St to avoid conflicts with right-turning traffic onto Berry.
- New stops will be added in both directions on Hudson Ave & Newhall St. This will bring riders closer to the Third Street corridor and nearby homes.

- The inbound stop on Lincoln Way & Great Highway will be relocated to the east side of the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as part of the Great Highway closure to improve access.

- Stops in the Stonestown Mall area will be consolidated:
- The outbound 20th Ave & Buckingham Way and the 20th Ave/Stonestown stops will be consolidated to a mid-point between the two in front of Whole Foods Market. This will help to improve reliability and reduce travel times.
- The inbound stop on 20th Ave & Buckingham Way will be removed to improve reliability and travel times. The existing stop on 20th Ave/Stonestown is just a two-minute walk south from this stop.
