511: Construction Forecast: December 2 - December 16, 2016 6 days ago More...

Safety observations and traffic adjustments are underway.

The roadway is being narrowed from three to two traffic lanes in each direction along the Van Ness Avenue roadway for construction in the median. The lane closures will start on Van Ness southbound at Broadway and northbound at McAllister Street. As work progresses north and south, the lane closures will expand until the roadway is  reduced to two lanes in each direction between Lombard and Mission streets.

Those who travel in and through the area are advised to take alternate routes and plan for delays.

NIGHT NOISE NOTICE: Neighbors should anticipate construction noise during the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. December 10 through December 30. Due to San Francisco's construction holiday moratorium, no construction work is allowed on any "business block" (defined as 50 percent or more linear feet of frontage devoted to business) between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. without the consent of the businesses on that block. While project staff is seeking permission from neighboring businesses to work during business hours, some project work will still need to be completed during nighttime hours. Neighbors on impacted blocks will be notified in advance.

511: Van Ness Improvement Project Construction Forecast: November 4 - 18, 2016 last month More...

Beginning the evening of November 11, major changes are coming to Van Ness Avenue that will affect the way people travel on the street for years to come.

Overnight on November 11, southbound Van Ness at Broadway will be reconfigured to allow two dedicated left turn lanes and two southbound lanes. The southbound bus stop at Van Ness and Vallejo was temporarily relocated October 27 in advance of this change.

On Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, left turn lanes will be permanently removed from Van Ness at most intersections. Left turns will only be possible from Van Ness southbound at Broadway or northbound at Lombard. A left turn will also be possible northbound at Hayes for the first six months of construction, but is planned to be removed in April 2017.

Once the left turns have been removed, work will begin in the median. The number of traffic lanes on Van Ness will be reduced from three to two in each direction beginning Monday, November 14. This work will start at Van Ness and Sutter and will expand north and south as workers remove and pave the existing median between Lombard and Mission streets. The median will be rebuilt at the end of construction, including planting 210 trees to replace the 86 that will be removed as part of construction.

Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra travel time and to test new routes before these changes take effect.

511: Southbound bus stop on Van Ness at Vallejo temporarily relocated to Van Ness at Green last month More...

As construction on the Van Ness Improvement Project gets underway, the southbound bus stop located on Van Ness Avenue at Vallejo Street will be relocated to southbound Van Ness Avenue at Green Street beginning today, October 27.

This bus stop must be temporarily relocated one block north for 16 months so southbound lanes on Van Ness may be shifted toward the curb between Green and Broadway. This change to the roadway will make room for upcoming construction.

After the bus stop relocation, the first signs of construction on Van Ness will happen near Broadway in November:

  • The left turns on southbound Van Ness at Broadway will be adjusted to two dedicated left turn lanes (from the existing dedicated left turn lane and permissive left/southbound lane).
  • Parking on the western (southbound) side of Van Ness between Vallejo and Broadway must be removed to make room for the adjustment of traffic lanes and construction.

Next, construction crews will prepare the roadway to make room for the removal of the existing median:

  • Most left turns from Van Ness will be removed. The only left turns permitted will be southbound at Broadway and northbound at Lombard. A left turn northbound at Hayes will also be permitted until April 2017. Motorists who currently make left turns from Van Ness Avenue are advised to test new routes before the left turns are eliminated.
  • Van Ness will be reduced from three to two lanes of travel in each direction. People traveling in and through the area are advised to allow extra travel time.

These traffic changes will set the stage for the much-needed utility replacements that will make up the first two years of construction.

Once construction is complete in 2019, transit riders will experience quicker Muni and Golden Gate Transit trips and walking Van Ness will be much safer for everyone. With your help and patience, we’ll restore Van Ness Avenue to a beautiful street for us all to enjoy.

Note: The estimated end date shown above is subject to change due to delays in construction related to weather, equipment breakdown, and/or unforeseen field conditions.
