This Weekend: Cherry Blossoms, Cesar Chavez Parade and Sunday Streets in Bayview

Cherry Blossom Festival

Japantown

This weekend's Cherry Blossom Festival is the first of two consecutive that celebrates the Japanese culture and the diversity of the Japanese-American community. Entering its 51st year, the annual event in San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood is the largest on the West coast, attracting over 220,000 people. The festival will showcase cultural performances, martial arts, live music and food vendors. This Saturday will feature the Queen Program, which is dedicated to mentoring young women to help them develop the leadership skills necessary to promote both their personal strengths but also to promote a stronger community.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders may use the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 22 Fillmore, 38 Geary or 38R Geary Rapid routes to Japantown.

Muni Service Note: There are no planned service changes for this event. All routes to and from the area of the event may see slight delays and heavier than usual ridership.

Cesar Chavez Parade and Festival

Saturday, 11 AM to 6 PM
Mission

The annual celebration of the legacy of workers' and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez returns to the Mission this weekend for the Cesar Chavez Parade and Festival. The parade will assemble beginning around 10 a.m. at Dolores Park and will step off at 11 a.m., proceeding to 24th Street. The parade will end at the 24th Street Fair between Treat Avenue and Bryant Street, where attendees can learn about the life of Cesar Chavez while also enjoying live music, family entertainment, a car show, as well as food and drink from local businesses.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders may take the J Church Line, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 48 Quintara/24th Street, 49 Van Ness/Mission, or the 54 Felton routes to the parade or festival.

Muni Service Note: The 12, 14, 14R, 48, 49, and 67 routes will be rerouted. All routes to and from the area of the event may see slight delays and heavier than usual ridership.

Sunday Streets

Sunday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM
Bayview/Dogpatch

Discover Third Street's small businesses and explore the main corridor of The Bayview without the presence of automobiles this Sunday during this year's third edition of Sunday Streets. Spanning Third Street from 22nd Street to Carroll Avenue, pedestrians will have the freedom to enjoy all Third Street has to offer as well as live music and performances, block parties, family activities and more during this car-free event.

How to Get There on Muni: Get to the car-free fun via the T Third Line, 19 Polk, 22 Fillmore, 23 Monterey, 24 Divisadero, 44 O'Shaughnessy, 48 Quintara/24th Street or 54 Felton routes to the event.

Muni Service Note: The 24, 48 and 54 routes will be rerouted. All routes to and from the area of the event may see slight delays and heavier than usual ridership.

Bus Shuttle Substitute for California Cable Cars: The gearboxes that power the cable car system require maintenance. That work will begin this Friday, April 13th at 1:30 p.m. and will continue until the end of service on Monday, April 16. Bus shuttles will substitute cable car service on California Street between Van Ness Avenue and Drumm Street. Learn more on our project page. 

Reminder of Weekend Early Closures of Twin Peaks Tunnel: Preparatory work inside the Twin Peaks Tunnel ahead of the summer closure continues this weekend. Stations will close early on Friday and Saturday nights to provide crews extra time to work inside the tunnel. Buses will run in place of the K, L and M lines.
