Muni Service on Fourth of July Holiday

On Friday, July 3 (Fourth of July Holiday, Observed), Muni will operate on a Saturday Schedule.

Saturday, Fourth of July

San Francisco is preparing for one of the most significant Fourth of July celebrations in decades. To mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the city will host a special fireworks display launched from the Golden Gate Bridge—only the third time fireworks have ever been launched from the iconic span.

The event is expected to attract large crowds from across the Bay Area and beyond. In response, transportation, public safety and event agencies have been working together to develop a coordinated plan to help people travel safely and efficiently before and after the celebration.

We strongly encourage using public transit, walking and biking to get in and around San Francisco during this event. It is an easier and safer option for everyone planning to attend or for those wanting to move around the city to various events. July 4 is always one of the busiest days of the year at San Francisco’s waterfront. This year’s fireworks location near the Golden Gate Bridge means traffic exiting the Presidio and surrounding neighborhoods will be significantly impacted. Expect long lines, delays and crowding both coming and going, similar to a major concert venue.

Those who plan to attend are encouraged to make a day of it and experience San Francisco’s unique neighborhoods.

Before the show, from 4 to 11:30 p.m., Muni will provide extra service to connect people from the Muni Metro Subway, BART, and the Ferries to the fireworks viewing area.

  • Marina Fireworks Shuttle, will serve Powell BART, Geary and O'Farrell (from Van Ness to Stockton), Van Ness (from Geary & O'Farrell to Chestnut), and the Marina District at Chestnut & Fillmore.
  • Pier 39 - BART Embarcadero Fireworks Shuttle, will serve North Point/Kearny, F Market & Wharves stops on Embarcadero, and Embarcadero Station.

Customers are encouraged to take Fireworks Shuttles or 28 19th Avenue. Space will be limited on other Muni routes serving the area. There will be extra service on 28 19th Ave, 49 Van Ness/Mission, S Shuttle Market Street and T Third.

Service on all other Muni routes will be limited, Fireworks Shuttles are recommended. Full buses may skip stops. Customers can use priority stops to board. For more information, visit SFMTA.com/July4.

Temporary Street Closures

Temporary street closures and restrictions will be in effect at the following locations on Saturday, July 4:

  • Jefferson Street will be closed to all traffic between Hyde Street and The Embarcadero from 1 until 11 p.m. Traffic on The Embarcadero will be routed onto Beach Street.
  • Streets in the Fisherman’s Wharf and Marina neighborhoods will be restricted to local access, beginning around at 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Only residents, guests and deliveries will be permitted to access streets north of Bay, Alhambra and Francisco streets as well as Chestnut Street between Fillmore Street and Van Ness Avenue after 8 p.m.

Ways to Get to and from the Show

Taxi and Rideshare

  • Muni, walking and biking will be an efficient way to travel to and from the fireworks. For those choosing to use rideshare services, they are expected to be busy after the fireworks and geofences will be in place to help minimize congestion.
  • A temporary taxi stand will be set up on the west side of Baker Street between Beach Street and Bay Street (along the side of the Palace of Fine Arts) from 6 p.m. until midnight.
  • Please be prepared to walk away from the viewing locations when requesting a rideshare service.

Leaving the Fireworks:

  1. Marina Fireworks Shuttle will run from 9:45 p.m. to midnight. Board on Chestnut Street between Fillmore and Laguna streets. The shuttle will continue eastbound on Chestnut Street and then southbound on Van Ness stopping at 49 stops from Union to O'Farrell streets. The shuttle will turn onto O'Farrell Street stopping Taylor and Powell streets with the last stop at Market and Powell streets.
  2. Pier 39 - BART Fireworks Shuttle will run from 9:45 p.m. to midnight. The shuttle will pick up at North Point and Kearny streets and then continue along The Embarcadero making all F line stops from The Embarcadero & Bay Street to Market & Drumm streets.

CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES

Transportation Impacts related to FIFA World Cup 26™ SF

As we are gearing up for the FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area that showcases all that San Francisco has to offer, we want to keep you updated on transportation, traffic and parking updates.

See transportation details for FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area at SFMTA.com/WorldCup.

Beginning Thursday, June 11 through Sunday, July 19, during event weeks, it is anticipated moderate impacts in and around areas where official soccer watch parties will be held at events citywide, including official gatherings at Pier 39, Spark Social Yerba Buena Garden and Thrive City (Chase Center) as well as many neighborhood events.

It is expected limited parking changes, as well as street and sidewalk closures in San Francisco. These impacts are expected to be intermittent throughout the tournament to support community fan activities.

The SFMTA staff are working to finalize details and plans with our City partners and will provide an update about all street, sidewalks and parking changes across San Francisco. We look forward to ensuring that FIFA World Cup 26™ SF Bay Area is a rewarding experience for everyone in San Francisco.

Several matches in Santa Clara will have evening start times. Muni is operating late-night shuttle service to ensure people get home or their transfer in San Francisco safely. Shuttles will circulate between Union Square, SoMa, BART and Caltrain at 4th/King and serve stops along the 45 Union/Stockton line.

UPDATE: 13th Street Safety Project

Now until 2027: The 13th Street Safety Project is currently under construction to deliver new traffic safety improvements on 13th Street and Duboce Avenue between Folsom and Valencia streets, including protected bike lanes, sidewalk extensions, traffic signal upgrades, accessibility upgrades, sewer upgrades, repaving, and parking/loading changes.

Crews will work at multiple locations over the course of construction, with intermittent lane impacts, traffic shifts, and parking restrictions. Road users should use caution near crews, follow posted signage, and plan for extra travel time when moving through the corridor:

  • 13th Street at South Van Ness Avenue (Division Circle Navigation Center frontage): Crews are building a new sidewalk segment and a separate bike lane channel. During this work, only one eastbound right-turn lane is available from 13th Street to southbound South Van Ness Avenue. When construction is complete, both eastbound right-turn lanes will reopen. Restoration is anticipated to be in end of June 2026

Construction is led by San Francisco Public Works in partnership with the SFMTA. For construction updates and to sign up for notifications, visit sfpublicworks.org/13thStreetSafety. For project details and design information, visit SFMTA.com/13thStreetSafety.

ONGOING

ONGOING: Citywide Muni Service Changes

Since Saturday, June 6, Muni made service changes across San Francisco. These changes aim to improve reliability, reduce crowding and make trips more consistent for riders. These Muni service changes are cost neutral.

Several routes will receive schedule adjustments to improve spacing between buses and reduce delays. To respond to crowding, the SFMTA is also adding targeted late-night service to these routes: 14 Mission and 14 Owl.

There will be additional updates which include:

  • Stop changes on the following bus routes: 35 Eureka and 48 Quintara/24th Street
  • Reliability improvements on the T Third
  • New stop locations tied to the Lake Merced Quick Build Project

These changes are based on rider feedback, operator input and service data. Due to the SFMTA’s budget gap, we cannot increase overall Muni service. Without new funding sources, the SFMTA would have to make significant cuts to Muni service It could mean eliminating one-third of service. For more information about the SFMTA’s budget and the potential solutions we are considering, visit the budget webpage.

For more information, visit SFMTA.com/ServiceChanges.

ONGOING: Transbay Howard Streetscape Project – Road Construction

Feb. 2026 through 2028: As a part of the Transbay Howard Streetscape Project, new safety upgrades, traffic signal infrastructure, landscaping and a protected two-way bicycle lane are being built on Howard Street between The Embarcadero and 4th Street.

Due to work at multiple sites, expect intermittent delays and lane closures on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drivers should exercise caution near construction zones, follow posted detour signage, and consider using alternate routes. During major events and conventions, work will be paused near Moscone Center.

This is a San Francisco Public Works project, with support from the SFMTA. For more information and to sign up for construction updates, visit sfpublicworks.org/TransbayHoward. To learn more about the project design, visit SFMTA.com/TransbayHoward.

ONGOING: SFPUC Geary Boulevard Sewer and Water Replacements

Now until 2027: Replacement work of sewer and water lines is currently taking place along Geary Boulevard between 32nd Avenue and Stanyan Street. Due to construction work at multiple locations, some of the bus stops for Muni routes 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid will be temporarily relocated nearby. Riders should look for orange signage at impacted bus stops.
