On-Street Parking Policy

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) uses a variety parking management tools to help make parking readily available, including parking meters and residential parking permits (RPP). To help parking management across the City be more transparent, effective, and consistent with the SFMTA’s overall transportation goals, our agency recently developed a document summarizing what we consider when determining where to use different parking management tools. This document articulates and clarifies long-standing SFMTA practices and policies.

On-street parking is part of San Francisco’s transportation system, and how the SFMTA manages that parking affects the system’s overall success. Effective on-street parking management helps create parking availability, thereby making it easier to park, reducing congestion and illegal parking, improving Muni’s speed and reliability, and increasing public safety and economic vitality.

The on-street parking management policy document will provide guidelines for future parking management changes, including refining proposals for the 17th & Folsom, Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, and 12th & Folsom areas. The document also establishes a baseline for future citywide RPP reform. Most importantly, it will improve the transparency of how we make parking management decisions across San Francisco.
