The Safe Speeds SF Campaign

Speed kills. It’s one of the leading cause of traffic fatalities in San Francisco. The victims are people’s mothers or grandparents or children. That’s why the city began a citywide campaign in the public interest called Safe Speeds SF.

It’s an educational program with high-visibility enforcement as a component. Education efforts include radio ads emphasizing the serious consequences of speeding – a leading cause of traffic deaths in San Francisco. Listen here.

October 2016 brought increased strategic police speed enforcement on high-injury, high-speed corridors identified by data and community input within every San Francisco supervisorial district.

The Safe Speeds SF Campaign is a robust interagency effort, supporting Vision Zero SF, the city’s commitment to end traffic fatalities moving the city towards safer streets, safer vehicles and safer people.

Guided by data that show demonstrated high rates of speeding and high collisions with people on bikes and walking, these Safe Speeds SF safety enforcement zones were identified by the SFMTA, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the San Francisco Police Department, and a steering committee that included Walk SF and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.
