Project Introduction

Installation of new traffic safety improvements is underway!

Construction is scheduled to take place through 2024. Public Works will be leading the construction phase for this project, and the SFMTA will continue to be available as a resource for any questions or concerns. Additional construction details will be published soon on San Francisco Public Works’ 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project webpage Be on the lookout for related project updates from SFMTA and Public Works.

6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project Background

The 6th Street corridor has one of the highest concentrations of pedestrian collisions, injuries, and fatalities in San Francisco. In support of San Francisco’s Vision Zero initiative, the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project aims to create a safe and inviting place for people to walk by transforming 6th Street with wider sidewalks, new traffic signals, and streetscape improvements. After extensive community outreach and a lengthy two-year environmental review period, the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project was approved by the SFMTA Board of Directors on October 16th, 2018. The Quick-Build portion of the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project was completed in September 2019 to bring near-term safety improvements to the corridor. Construction on the longer-term improvements is expected to wrap up in 2024.

PROJECT GOALS AND SCOPE

This proposal is the result of a comprehensive community outreach process that began based on the recommendations of the WalkFirst pedestrian safety study. The 6th Street corridor exhibits one of the highest concentrations of severe and fatal pedestrian collisions in San Francisco. 6th Street is classified as a High Injury Network street by the SFMTA and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. This is a key project in the City’s focus on Vision Zero – the City’s goal of reducing all traffic deaths to zero by 2024. The primary goals of the project are as follows:

  • Improve safety for all street users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists
  • Create a safe and inviting public space for all people who live, work, or visit 6th Street

The 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project aims to transform 6th Street into a multi-modal corridor that improves safety for pedestrians and other vulnerable users of the street. Between Market and Howard streets the improvements along 6th Street include:

  • A reduction in the number of vehicle travel lanes on 6th Street (from four lanes to three lanes);
  • The widening of the sidewalks on both sides of 6th Street;
  • The installation of new curb bulb-outs at all intersections;
  • The installation of new traffic signals at Stevenson and Natoma Streets and the striping of new crosswalks at all alleys crossing 6th Street;
  • The installation of streetscape improvements such as decorative sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, and other streetscape components
  • The application of new roadway striping at various locations;
