Avoid Theft on Muni

  • STAY AWAKE. A sleeping customer is an easy target. If you feel drowsy move around.
  • STAY ALERT. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
  • DON’T DISPLAY money or valuables.
  • SECURE BELONGINGS. Close bags and carry them where you can see them.
  • AVOID DISTRACTIONS. Loud arguments or commotion can be staged to distract while a pocket is being picked.
  • GET HELP immediately if you are the victim of a pickpocket.

Late Night Stops

After 8:30 pm, you may request to be let off between most scheduled bus stops.

  • Tell your driver where you would like to exit.
  • Remind the driver when you pull the request cord
  • This service is only available on buses and not on the following streets:
    • Market Street
    • Ocean Avenue
    • Judah Street
    • West Portal Avenue
    • Lincoln Way outbound (on the Golden Gate Park side of the street)

Use Muni Metro Safely

In the subway station:

  • KEEP CLEAR all escalator landings.
  • USE ELEVATORS if you have limited physical abilities or are carrying large or heavy objects.
  • PLAY IN THE PARK, NOT THE METRO. Playing on escalators, running in stations or on trains and platforms, roller skating, blading, cycling, scootering and skateboarding increase the risk of injuries to you and others.
  • EYES UP. Watch where you walk.
  • AVOID HAZARDS like wet areas or debris and report unmarked hazards to the Station Agent.
  • SECURE BELONGINGS. Close bags and carry them where you can see them.
  • Gasoline, flammable or volatile solvents, acids, etc. are prohibited in stations or trains.
  • Fire extinguishers are located on station platforms.

On the subway platform:

  • NEVER sit on the platform edge or touch the outside of moving trains.
  • DO NOT ENTER A TRACKWAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
    • If you drop something or see an object in the trackway, do not attempt to retrieve it.
    • If you see a person in the trackway, do not attempt rescue.
    • Contact a Station Agent for help immediately. White courtesy telephones located on Metro station platforms dial directly to the Station Agent booths.
    • For police assistance, call 911
  • STAY BACK behind the yellow texturized edge. Wait to approach until the train comes to a complete stop and doors are open.
  • STAY CLEAR of closing vehicle doors. Muni Metro doors open and close automatically. Blocking them can cause personal injury or vehicle damage, delays and service disruption.
  • SECURE BELONGINGS. Close bags and carry them where you can see them.

On the train

  • USE EMERGENCY INTERCOMS report incidents or unsafe conditions, located in the center sections of each train car. Press and release the red button and wait for the Operator to respond; push the button when speaking. The Operator can contact Muni Central Control if necessary.
  • Fire extinguishers are located in the cab compartments at either end of the train.
  • HOLD ON. Sudden stops can occur.
  • DON’T LEAN on train doors. It’s a safety hazard and can cause door malfunctions that disrupt service.
  • WATCH YOUR STEP when entering and exiting a train in a Muni Metro Station. There is a three-inch gap between the train and the platform.
  • WAIT FOR STEPS at street level before exiting. Notify the Operator immediately if the steps have not lowered.
  • KEEP CLEAR. Keep personal items out of the way of fellow passengers, walkways and doorways.
  • SECURE BELONGINGS. Close bags and carry them where you can see them.

On the street

  • EYES UP. Watch where you walk and look before you exit; automobiles do not always stop for exiting passengers.
  • USE CROSSWALKS. Do not cross between trains. You cannot always hear an oncoming train.
  • WAIT FOR STEPS at street level before exiting. Notify the Operator immediately if the steps have not lowered.
  • Do not attempt to climb over train couplers located between train cars. Never ride on a coupler.
