Muni Service Changes

Early Opening of Market Street Subway

The Market Street Subway will open early, at 6 a.m., on Sunday and there will also be extra service provided on the N Judah and S Shuttle (West Portal to Embarcadero) lines. Between the hours of 6 and approximately 7:40 a.m., ONLY West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro, Church, Van Ness and Embarcadero stations will be open and serviced. Civic Center, Powell, and Montgomery stations will NOT be open until approximately 7:40 a.m. for normal weekend service start times (8 a.m.). While trains will still pass through the three closed stations, they will not stop nor service them.

Summary of Service Impacts

The event will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. If you're not participating in the race as a runner or spectator, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.

Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course:

  • The N Judah, 5, 28, 29 and 31 will likely experience crowding and delays.
  • There will be added service to and from the race on the 5X, 5R, 28 and N Judah.

Routes that cross the course:

  • The 14, 14R, 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, and 43 will be divided into two sections, with no service between sections.
    • You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or take an alternate route.
  • The 30 and 45 will not serve South of Market.
    • Use the Central Subway (T Third Street Metro service), or 12 routes to access SoMa and Caltrain.
  • The 49 will not serve south of Van Ness & McAllister OR north of Van Ness & Market.
    • You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or take an alternate route.
  • You can cross the park on the 18, 28, 29, or 44 routes. Expect delays due to heavy ridership and traffic.

Market and Mission Street routes and lines

  • Some routes on Market and Mission -- 6, 7, 9, 14, 49, KLM Owls -- will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.
  • BART will provide extra service before the event to get participants to Embarcadero Station by 7 a.m. Full details are available on their website.
    • Adult "A" Pass holders may use regular BART service between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge.
    • All others may use BART to cross the course at their regular BART fare.
  • Caltrain will provide two special, limited-stop pre-race trains to San Francisco. Full details are available on their website.
