The 2017 Alaska Airlines Bay to Breakers race will take place on Sunday May 21st. Street closures for the race will impact traffic and Muni service for most of the day.

Summary of Service Impacts [back to top]

The annual Bay to Breakers footrace will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. The race starts on Howard from Steuart to 9th Street., runs on Hayes from Market to Divisadero, on Fell from Divisadero to the Golden Gate Park, and on JFK Drive all the way to the Great Highway. Here is the official course map.

If you're not participating in the race as a runner or spectator, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.

Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course

  • The 5, 7, 31, 38 and N Owl routes and N Line will experience crowding and delays.
  • There will be added service to and from the race on the 5X, 5R and NX routes.
  • There will be added morning N Line Metro service east of 19th Avenue.

Routes that cross the course

  • The 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43, and 47 routes will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take as alternate route.
  • The 8, 10, and 12 routes will route around the course via The Embarcadero. 
  • The 30 and 45 routes will not serve south of Market. Use the 8, 10, or 12 routes to access SoMa.
  • The 49 Route will not serve north of Mission and South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach the 47 Route for Van Ness service.
  • You can cross the park on the 18, 28, 29, or 44 routes. Expect delays due to heavy ridership and traffic.

Routes that normally go to the Ferry Building:

  • The 21 and 31 routes will only go to the Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also reroute over most of its route.

Market and Mission Street lines

  • The Muni Metro Subway will open at 6:00 am
    • Shuttles will run from West Portal to Embarcadero
    • Regular Muni Metro service will begin at 8:00 am
  • BART will open at 6:00 am
    • Adult "A" Pass holders may use BART between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge.
    • All others may use BART to cross the course at their regular BART fare.
  • Some routes on Market and Mission -- 6, 7, 9, 14, 49, K-L-M Owls -- will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.

Areas around the beginning and end of the race will be a mad rush of activity. We're here to help keep you sane.

  • The San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day. 
  • We will have SFMTA staff pre-race in the Ferry Building vicinity who can direct you to stops and transfer points. Look for us in bright orange or yellow vests.
  • We will also have SFMTA staff after the race in the vicinity of Fulton & 47th. We'll still be wearing those bright vests.

You are strongly urged to call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center before race day for personalized trip assistance. The following is general information that may help if you are unable to reach the Transit Information Center, and may not be the most efficient for your particular trip. Expect crowding and allow a lot of extra time for your trip.

    2. Transfer to the 5 Route west on McAllister & 7th to Fillmore, where you can transfer again to the 22 route.

    • North of McAllister
    • South of Haight
      • Between Castro & 18th and Haight & Divisadero, transfer to the 24 Shuttle
  • No service between Haight & Divisadero and Divisadero & McAllister
  • If you want to walk between sections:
    • Distance: About 1/2 mile
    • Expect delays when crossing the race route
  • To ride from the northern section to the southern section:
    • At McAllister, transfer to the 5 Route east to Civic Center Station
    • Take the Muni Metro Subway to Castro Street, where you can transfer to the 24 route
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    • At Castro & Market, take the Muni Metro Subway to Civic Center Station
    • Transfer to the 5 Route west on McAllister & 7th to Divisadero, where you transfer to the 24 Route

    3. Transfer to the N Line east to Carl & Cole, where you can take the 33 Route.
  • To ride from the southern section to the northern section:
    1. Take the N Line west to 9th and Irving.
    2. Take the 44 Route north to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
      • Fulton (5 or 5R route)
      • Balboa (31 Route),
      • Geary (38 or 38R route),
      • Clement (2 Route), or
      • California (1 Route)

    2. Transfer to the 44 Route south to Lincoln and Judah where you can take the 43 Route.

    • Consider using the 28 Route from the Sunset District to the Marina District, or
    • Take the 44 Route north from 9th and Judah to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
