The 2018 Alaska Airlines Bay to Breakers race will take place on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Streets will be closed and Muni will reroute service along the race route. After the race, Muni will provide express service back to the downtown area.

Street Closures

The race starts on Howard from Steuart to 9th Street., runs along Hayes from Market to Divisadero, on Fell from Divisadero to the Golden Gate Park, and on JFK Drive all the way to the Great Highway. The official course map is availble on the Bay to Breakers website. Streets will be closed in the following areas at the times indicated:

Starting Line Area

Closures from Saturday at 7 p.m. to Sunday at 4 p.m.

  • Main: between Mission and Folsom
  • Howard: between Embarcadero and Beale
  • Steuart: east of Mission
  • Spear: between Mission and Folsom

    Muni Service Changes

    Summary of Service Impacts

    The event will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. If you're not participating in the race as a runner or spectator, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.

    Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course

    • The N, 5, 7, 31, 38 and N Owl and will experience crowding and delays.
    • There will be added service to and from the race on the 5X, 5R and NX.
    • There will be added morning N Line Metro service east of 19th Avenue.

    Routes that cross the course

    • The 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43, and 47 will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or take an alternate route.
    • The 8, 10, and 12 will reroute around the course via The Embarcadero. 
    • The 30 and 45 will not serve south of Market. Use the 8, 10, or 12 routes to access SoMa.
    • The 49 will not serve north of Mission and South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach the 47 for Van Ness service.
    • You can cross the park on the 18, 28, 29, or 44 routes. Expect delays due to heavy ridership and traffic.

    Routes that normally go to the Ferry Building

    • The 21 will not operate until Hayes street is clear of the race. Use the 5 instead.
    • The 31 will only go to the Temporary Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also reroute over most of its route.

    Market and Mission Street routes and lines

    • The Muni Metro Subway will open at 6 a.m.
      • Shuttles will run from West Portal to Embarcadero
      • Regular Muni Metro service will begin at 8 a.m.
    • BART will open at 6 a.m.
      • Adult "A" Pass holders may use BART between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge.
      • All others may use BART to cross the course at their regular BART fare.
    • Some routes on Market and Mission -- 6, 7, 9, 14, 49, K-L-M Owls -- will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.

      You are strongly encourages to call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center before race day for personalized trip assistance. The following is general information that may help if you are unable to reach the Transit Information Center, and may not be the most efficient for your particular trip. Expect crowding and allow a lot of extra time for your trip.

      T Bus

      Start of Service until 8 a.m. Inbound reroute will be along Folsom, between 10th St and The Embarcadero.

      2 Sutter/Clement 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

      Switchback will begin at Kearny and follow the 3 Jackson route.
      The stop nearest to Market Street is Sutter & Sansome.

      5 Fulton

      Start of Service until 2 p.m.

      Switchback will begin at Larkin.
      The stop nearest Market Street is McAllister & Jones.
      There will be added Express inbound service.
      If you want local stops, be sure to board a local bus.

      6 Haight/Parnassus

      6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

      Switchback will begin at Laguna.
      The stop nearest to Market Street is Haight & Gough.
      Use Muni Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations.

      7 Haight/Noriega
       
      Start of Service to 10 a.m.

      Reroute will be along Judah and Funston in both directions.
      Switchback will begin at 10th St.
      The stop nearest to Downtown is Market & Van Ness.
      Use Muni Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations.

      7 Haight/Noriega 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reroute will be along Judah and Funston in both directions.
      The stop nearest to the Temporary Transbay Terminal is Mission & Beale.
      7 Haight/Noriega After 2 p.m. The stop nearest to the Temporary Transbay Terminal is Mission & Beale.
      8 Bayshore  6 a.m. to 10 a.m. To Fisherman's Wharf: Reroute will start at Folsom. The stop nearest to Market Street is Kearny & Geary.
      To City College: Reroute will start at Clay. The first regular stop is Harrison & 5th St.

      9 San Bruno

      6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

      Switchback will begin at Mission.
      The stop nearest to Downtown is 11th St & Market.
      Use Muni Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations.

      10 Townsend 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. To Pacific Heights: Reroute will start at Folsom. The stop nearest to Market Street is Sansome & Sutter.
      To General Hospital: Reroute will start at Clay. The first regular stop is 2nd St & Harrison.
      12 Folsom/Pacific 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. To Pacific Heights: Reroute will start at Folsom. The stop nearest to Market Street is Sansome & Sutter.
      To General Hospital: Reroute will start at Clay. The first regular stop is Harrison & 2nd St.
      14 Mission and
      14R Mission Rapid
      6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

      Route divided into two sections:

      • East of 8th Street
      • West/South of 10th Street.

      Use Muni Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations.
      Use BART from 16th Street/Mission Station to any Market Street station. BART fares apply.

      18 46th Avenue Start of Service
      until 6 p.m.

      Reroute will be along Judah, 19th Ave. Crossover and Fulton in both directions.
      To Outer Richmond: The first regular stop north of Golden Gate Park is La Playa & Fulton.
      To Stonestown: The first regular stop south of Golden Gate Park is 46th Ave & Kirkham.

      19 Polk 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

      Route divided into two sections:

      • North of Mission
        • Switchback begins at Mission. Reroute will be along McAllister.
        • To Fisherman's Wharf: The nearest stop to Market Street is 7th St & Market.
      • South of Folsom
        • Switchback begins at Harrison.
        • To Hunters Point: First stop is 8th St & Folsom
      • No service between Folsom and Mission
      • If you want to walk between sections:
        • Distance: less than 1/2 mile
        • Expect delays when crossing the race route.
      • To ride from northern section to the southern section, take the 10 or 12 at Pacific to Harrison & 8th St, or
        • Take N Owl Route (before 6 a.m.) or N Line (after 6 a.m.) to Folsom & The Embarcadero.
        • Take the 10 or 12 to 8th St, where you can catch the 19.
      • To ride from the southern section to the northern section, take 12 Route from Folsom & 8th to Polk.
      21 Hayes Start of service until 1 p.m.

      No service until Hayes Street reopens.
      Take the 5 Fulton during the race.

      22 Fillmore 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
      • Route divided into two sections:
        • North of McAllister
        • South of Haight
      • No service between Haight and McAllister
      • If you want to walk between sections:
        • Distance: About 1/2 mile
        • Expect delays when crossing the race route
      • To ride from the northern section to the southern section:
        1. At McAllister, transfer to the 5 Fulton east to Civic Center Station.
        2. Take the Muni Metro Subway to Church Street, where you can transfer to the 22 to Potrero Hill.
      • To ride from the southern section to the northern section:
        1. At Church & Market, take the Muni Metro Subway to Civic Center Station.
        2. Transfer to the 5 Fulton west on McAllister & Jones to Fillmore, where you can transfer again to the 22 to The Marina.
      • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of the 22.

      24 Divisadero 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
      • Route divided into three sections:
        • North of McAllister
        • South of 18th St
        • Shuttle service between 18th St and Haight

        • Expect delays when crossing the race route
      • To ride from the northern section to the southern section:
        • At McAllister, transfer to the 5 Route Fulton to Civic Center Station
        • Take the Muni Metro Subway to Castro Street, where you can transfer to the 24 to Bayview
      • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
        • At Castro & Market, take the Muni Metro Subway to Civic Center Station
        • Transfer to the 5 Fulton west on McAllister & Jones to Divisadero, where you transfer to the 24 to Pacific Heights
      • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of the 24.

      Get Assistance

      Areas around the beginning and end of the race will be a mad rush of activity. We're here to help keep you sane.

      • The San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day. 
      • We will have SFMTA staff pre-race in the Ferry Building vicinity who can direct you to stops and transfer points. Look for us in bright orange or yellow vests.
      • We will also have SFMTA staff after the race in the vicinity of Fulton & 47th. We'll still be wearing those bright vests.
