Muni Forward makes getting around San Francisco faster, safer and more reliable. We have expanded the Muni Rapid network. We are making connections to more destinations. And we are giving Muni priority on congested streets.
Through Muni Forward, the SFMTA has built over 100 miles of reliability improvements to keep the city’s buses and trains moving. New bus bulbs help speed up boarding. Our traffic signals now stay green more often for transit. And we’ve added over 27 miles of new or improved transit lanes since 2020 to keep Muni out of congestion.
Our work focuses on the busiest lines that carry over 80% of Muni riders. Muni Forward improvements are informed by ridership data, customer feedback and the Muni Service Equity Strategy. Our vision for service and reliability improvements is guided by the ConnectSF Transit Strategy. ConnectSF defines a Five-Minute Network where service would be most frequent.
Ridership has grown where we’re making improvements. Overall ridership on Muni Rapid bus lines increased by 34% from 2022 to 2025. These Rapid lines are where we’ve made the most Muni Forward improvements. This increase outpaced the post-pandemic ridership gains experienced by the Muni system as a whole.
Muni Forward is also an essential component of the Street Safety Initiative. This is the city’s commitment to improve traffic safety and reduce injury collisions. Muni Forward projects make safety improvements on our most frequent transit corridors. Making transit more reliable also gets more vehicles off the road. This is proven to make streets safer for people walking.
Muni Forward also delivers technology and transit stop upgrades to improve your customer experience. We’re installing new and improved real-time information displays, lighting and signage at Muni stops. We’re expanding stops with more space for passenger amenities. And we’re making our traffic signals smarter to reduce delays for buses and trains.

- 5 Fulton: Fulton Street transit bulbouts and transit signal priority
- 12 Folsom/Pacific: Folsom Street transit lane
- 14 Mission: Mission Street transit bulbouts
- 19 Polk: Hyde Street transit lane red colorization
- 29 Sunset: transit stop enhancements and stop consolidation
- J Church: San Jose Avenue transit lanes and boarding islands
- K Ingleside: Ocean Avenue boarding islands
- M Ocean View: San Jose Avenue transit lanes and boarding islands
- T Third: signal timing improvements
- West Portal: transit, traffic and pedestrian improvements
What’s Next
The next phase of quick-build improvements are underway on the K Ingleside and M Ocean View. Following quick-build improvements, detailed design of permanent improvements is underway for the construction of approved projects on the 8 Bayshore, 29 Sunset, 30 Stockton, 38 Geary, J Church, K Ingleside and M Ocean View.
Planning and outreach is underway on:
- California Street Transit and Safety Project (1 California)
- Fillmore Street Transit and Safety Project (22 Fillmore)
- N Judah Transit and Safety Project
- T Third Phase 3 reliability improvements
