Single RideTickets will no longer be available for purchase on MuniMobile effective September 1, 2026.
• Instead, you can purchase a single ride fare using Clipper — or simply tap any chip-enabled debit or credit card on any faregate or Clipper card reader on board Muni vehicles (adult fares only).
• Muni-only Day Passes, cable car tickets, Lifeline passes and Visitor Passports (1-Day, 3-Day and 7-Day) will continue to be available in the app.

August 2026 update:

Plans are underway to sunset the MuniMobile standalone app. With new ways to pay your fare through the Clipper system, we will be gradually retiring features in the app. MuniMobile users will be updated about changes through in-app alerts and emails.  Our webpage will also stay updated with the latest information.

Many features available in the MuniMobile app are now also available through the Clipper system. Paying with Clipper has never been easier and offers new benefits:

  • Tap-to-pay with a debit card, credit card or your phone
  • Get a discount of up to $2.85 on each transfer between transit agencies within a two-hour ride period
  • Added funds show up instantly to an upgraded Clipper account — as opposed to several days.

Sunsetting the standalone MuniMobile app is part of the SFMTA’s efforts to reduce costs and be more efficient. It will save an estimated $3 million over the next two fiscal years. As we face the largest financial crisis in our agency’s history, we are doing everything we can to cut costs.

We expect to completely transition away from MuniMobile by mid-2027. The proposed schedule for sunsetting MuniMobile features includes:

A: Other features will be retired in the coming months. Please watch this page for more details. We will gradually retire features from the MuniMobile app as new features are introduced on Clipper.

Q: I use the Muni Lifeline pass in MuniMobile. How can I continue using Lifeline if MuniMobile is going away?

MuniMobile lets you buy tickets instantly through a credit/debit card, PayPal account and now Apple Pay and Google Pay. Buy Muni tickets and passes in advance or on-the-go! Purchase tickets in advance, then activate them when you board the cable car. You can even buy tickets for the whole family from one smartphone. MuniMobile may not accept foreign credit cards. Please use PayPal, Apple, or Google pay if having trouble with your purchase.

With MuniMobile, your phone is your fare.

Cable car tickets are valid for a one-way trip only and not valid for transferring between cable car lines.

Log-In Requirements: The MuniMobile system requires you to login using the same method that you used to sign up for the account. You should only "Sign in with Apple", if that is the method that was used to create the account. This is applicable to "Sign in with Email", "Sign in with Google", and "Sign in with Facebook". If you do not use the same method, you will get a notification that the username and/or password is incorrect even if the username and password are the same as the method you are trying to use.

International Customers: Please enter "00000" as your billing Zip Code if using an international credit card. If your card provider requires AVS check then you will need to use another form of payment. The MuniMobile app currently does not support account creation and login for international customers (except in Northern America, Germany & India). Until this issue is resolved, feel free to download the app and use Trip Planner to plan your trips ahead of time. You may create a user account & purchase tickets here: Sign In - Muni Customer Portal (bytemark.co). Wait until you arrive in San Francisco to create a user account or purchase tickets on the app.
