Pay a Citation

Look up citation information and make a payment online.

If you receive a parking or transit citation you must pay or protest the citation by the due date, or you will be subject to late fees and collections fees. Vehicles with five or more parking citations will be subject to booting and/or towing. See the links below for information on parking tips, citation payments, and the protest process. Do not pay a citation if you wish to protest it

Ways to Pay

Web: Pay online.

Mail: Using the pre-printed envelope provided, send check or money order payable to “SFMTA” for the amount of the citation and any applicable penalties.  Do not use this address or the envelope provided with the ticket if you are sending in a protest of the citation or if you are sending in payment and proof of compliance for a fix-it ticket. Please write the citation number on the top of the check. If you do not have the pre-printed envelope, please mail payment to:

In-Person: You may pay in-person at the SFMTA Customer Service Center Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Please note that due to Muni monthly pass sales demand, wait times during the last week and first three days of each month can be long. Avoid the line and drop your payment in the mailbox in the lobby. Your payment will be processed within two business days.

Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted by phone and online. Visa, MasterCard, personal checks and cash are accepted at the SFMTA Customer Service Center.


If you made multiple or duplicate payments on a citation you will receive a letter in the mail indicating you are due a refund. Please follow the instructions in the letter to claim your refund. Deposits made for Administrative Hearings will be automatically refunded if the citation is dismissed.

DMV Registration hold

If you have any delinquent parking citations the SFMTA will notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and you will be required to pay the balance in order to renew your vehicle registration.  Citation payments made through DMV online or at their offices will take up to eight (8) weeks to be received by SFMTA.

If your vehicle is booted or towed prior to SFMTA receiving payment from DMV you will be required to submit payment for those citations directly to SFMTA.  A refund will be processed once payment is received.   If you have five or more outstanding citations you are encouraged to pay directly at the SFMTA Customer Service Center and obtain proof of payment to present at a DMV office to release your registration hold.

“Fix-It” Compliance Tickets

If you have been cited for a compliance violation such as “no plates” Vehicle Code 5200 or “expired/missing registration tags” Vehicle Code 5204A, you may provide proof of correction by having any California law enforcement officer or authorized DMV employee sign the back of the ticket or, if you no longer have the ticket,  complete the Proof of Correction Form.  Mail the citation or form to the address below along with the $10 compliance fee. Always remember to write the citation number on your check.

Please note that if both the proof of correction/compliance and the $10 fee is not received within 21 days, you will be responsible for late payment penalties that may accrue.

Can't Pay? We Can Help

If you cannot afford to pay your parking fines, you may be eligible to perform community service or set up a payment plan through a program administered by JBR Partners Inc. Community service and payment plans are not an option if your vehicle has been booted or towed and you are trying to reclaim it.  For more information on program requirements and fees please refer to the fact sheets below.
