Market Street Transit-Only Lanes

Project Overview

Red Transit Lanes Under Construction

As part of Muni Forward, SFMTA is installing a new red transit only lane treatment on the existing transit only lane on Market Street between 5th and 12th streets to improve the speed and reliability of Muni service. This red painted lane is similar to those already installed on 3rd street and Geary and O’Farrell streets. This treatment is designed to help motorists differentiate space reserved for buses and taxis from the normal traffic lanes on Market Street.

Transit-only on Market

Project Schedule:

  • Construction started: July 25, 2014
  • Location: Market Street between 5th and 12th Streets
  • Duration: Tentative completion date is November 2014
  • Time: 11:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays
  • There will be no disruption in Muni Service, but buses will be stopping at the curb.

Benefits of Red Transit Lanes

Transit-only lanes allow transit vehicles to bypass traffic congestion and avoid conflicts with other vehicles. When private vehicles drive or park in transit-only lanes they contribute to longer transit travel times and reduced transit service reliability.  Similar to green bicycle lane treatments, red transit-only lanes provide a strong visual reminder to road users to respect the transit-only restriction.

What are the Lanes Made Out of?

While they may look like they are painted on, the red lanes being installed on Market Street are actually made out of a material called thermoplastic.  This is the same material used for other roadway markings including lane lines and crosswalks.
