Tap to Pay using your credit or debit card New
Starting December 10, 2025 you can use a normal credit or debit card to pay a Single Ride Muni fare. You can read more details on Clipper's Contactless Payments webpage.
There are multiple ways of paying, buying your Muni bus, rail or cable car tickets.
Clipper®: Use your Clipper card on all Bay Area transit systems, including Muni. To pay for your trip, tap your Digital Clipper card stored on your smart phone or tap your plastic Clipper card on the ticket readers inside Muni vehicles and at Muni Metro fare gates.
MuniMobile®: Download the app and purchase your Muni fares instantly from your phone. Activate your ticket in the app when you board a Muni bus or enter the subway.
Cash: Fares can be paid either on vehicles (exact change is required) or at ticket vending machines (exact change is recommended) in Muni Metro subway stations with any U.S. currency or coin. Ticket vending machines do not give change but provide a voucher for future use.
Youth Ride Free: Youth aged 18 and under ride free on all regular Muni service (cable car excepted). Youth aged 4 and under ride Cable Car free.
Transfer Discounts when tapping Clipper Cards and credit / debit:
Inter-Agency Transfers - A $2.85 discount is provided off the adult Clipper fare for transfers to Muni from any connecting agency within two hours of the start of your first trip.
Current Fare Policy and Pricing
Just remember to keep proof of payment with you after paying your fare-otherwise, you could be subject to a Muni fare ticket. Proof of payment could be your ticket/pass, app or Clipper card/Clipper app/Clipper mobile wallet.
